How are composite fillings applied?

Applied in a single session on the same day, your dentist uses a color scale to select the composite material matching your tooth color. After cleaning and roughening the tooth surface, the composite is shaped and hardened with a curing light. The whole procedure takes about half an hour to an hour; if several teeth are treated on the same day, this may vary.

The lifespan of your fillings largely depends on you. The more care you give to your oral hygiene — brushing, flossing and following your dentist's instructions — the longer your fillings will last. A common misconception is that filled teeth can no longer decay; on the contrary, filled teeth can decay more easily and quickly than other teeth.
