Radiology

With our fully equipped radiology infrastructure including panoramic, periapical and cephalometric X-rays, accurate diagnosis is the first step of the right treatment.

During the comprehensive examination at our clinic, we take information about your general health and any regular medications; a general oral examination is performed, your treatment expectations are evaluated and a diagnostic X-ray may be requested.

During the general oral examination, all your teeth and oral tissues are evaluated, and you are informed if intervention is needed for teeth that are not yet causing complaints. Shallow decay may not bother you yet, but can cause discomfort as it progresses. Likewise, being informed about early-stage gum disease helps prevent future gum recession and tooth loss.

After your oral examination, various diagnostic X-rays may be requested. A panoramic X-ray may be needed for an overall assessment, or intraoral films may be taken for complaints related to a single tooth. Since the panoramic X-ray provides an overall image of the jaws, it can reveal interproximal decay, ill-fitting restorations, incomplete root canal treatment and root-tip inflammation that cannot be detected during a clinical examination.

Types of radiographs taken at our clinic

Panoramic radiography images the upper and lower dental arches and neighboring tissues on a single film and assists in detecting problem teeth, cysts and tumors. Periapical radiography provides a detailed, near life-size image of a tooth group and surrounding jawbone. Bite-wing radiography detects decay between adjacent teeth. Hand-wrist radiography determines bone age in orthodontic planning for children. Cephalometric radiography evaluates the two-dimensional relationship of the jaws and teeth with the skull base. TMJ radiography examines jaw joint movements, and occlusal radiography evaluates the horizontal position of teeth and salivary gland conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an X-ray useful for?
It is an indispensable diagnostic method of modern medicine — rays that contribute to diagnosis without opening or touching the patient's tissues. They are useful in trauma and fractures, in assessing the size and position of pathologies, in impacted teeth and in evaluating the position of teeth within the jawbone.
Is dental X-ray harmful in terms of radiation?
No. The radiation dose from a single dental X-ray film is even lower than the radiation received from exposure to sunlight. Taking 12-14 dental X-rays of the whole mouth in one session poses no medical risk.
Can I have a dental X-ray during pregnancy?
X-rays for dental problems should be avoided unless necessary. If required, they should be taken while wearing a lead apron. A standard 0.5 mm lead apron reduces the patient's radiation dose by 95%.
