Our teeth are very important to us. If we don’t take care of our teeth regularly and brush them, we may experience some dental problems and this reduces our quality of life a lot. The most common dental problem is caries. If the tooth decays are detected before getting deep and while it has no pain at the initial stage, they are treated with filling, when it starts to ache, that means that, the decays reached to the nerves, and it imposthumates, it needs to be treated with root canal treatment. There two methods can be confused from time to time. These two methods are root canal treatment and filling method. In the following text, the differences between root canal treatment and filling are given.
Here are the differences between root canal treatment and filling:
- Root canal treatment is a method used in the treatment of deep tooth decay, painful, inflammatory, abscessed diseases in the teeth.
- Filling is a method used to repair the cavities that couldn’t reach to decays or directly the decays in teeth.
- Filling is a shorter procedure than root canal treatment. The cost of fillin treatment is more moderate than the cost of root canal treatment.
- Root canal treatment includes cleaning, disinfecting and refilling the canals in the teeth. On the other hand, Filling is a method that involves cleaning tooth decays and use of various materials to repair cavities in the teeth. During the fiiling treatment, there is no work on root canals.
- Root canal treatment can be applied in cases such as caries, trauma, gingival abscesses and cysts.
- Root canal treatment is a more detailed procedure, but filling is a more superficial procedure.
- In the root canal treatment, the dental nerves are decontaminated from the inflammation ,while the nerves are not touched in the filling process.
Root canal treatment is a treatment performed to save the tooth as a result of dental caries reaching the layer where the dental nerves are, damage to the dental nerves after trauma and abscess of gum diseases.
Post-root canal treatment process, after the caries are cleaned, we remove the walls and dental nerves in the root canal, the root canal is shaped, disinfected, filled in such a way that it does not leak, and top filling is done.
Filling process is the filling of the cavity, that cause of cleaning the tooth decay or breaking the tooth, with suitable materials.
In which cases is the filling applied?
- Filling is a method used to repair cavities in teeth. In cases that ,have not progressed too much, do not cause pain, or have only mild cold sensitivity, is implemented the tooth filling process.
- If the dental nerves are not affected in the fractures of the teeth, it is also treated with filling.
- The abrasions on the tooth surface due to gingival recession, hard brushing and similar reasons, are aesthetically restored with filling.
In which situations is root canal treatment applied;
- Caries: It is used in the treatment of deep caries that have reached to the dental nerves . After the caries is cleaned, the root canals are cleaned, disinfected and refilled.
- Gingivitis: The patient who has gum disease,Due to the accumulation of tartar and plaque in our patients with gum disease, an infection occurs in the gums and bone loss begins around the teeth in advanced stages. The root of the tooth is affected in some cases. As a result, root canal treatment may be required.
- Trauma: Root canal treatment is implemented to save the tooth as a result of the emerging of the dental nerves cause of impact, falling, breaking of the tooth, movement of the tooth and falling of the tooth.
- Abscess: After the progression of dental caries, which is not treated on time, an inflammation occurs in the dental nerves. In this period, if it is not treated, this inflammation expands to dental roots and it is caused of occuring an abscess. Treatment of this abscess, root canal treatment must be implemented
